What Is the Rosary?

The Rosary is a cherished Catholic prayer tradition centered on meditating on key events (Mysteries) in the lives of Jesus and Mary. Praying the Rosary combines vocal prayer (the Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be) with meditation on the sacred mysteries. It’s a way to deepen faith, draw nearer to Christ, and grow in holiness.
Whether you are new to Catholic devotion or seeking a richer prayer life, this guide will walk you through every element of praying the Rosary. And, if you are seeking a rosary, be sure to shop at our store, RuggedRosaries.com.

Step-by-Step: How to Pray the Rosary
Below is a detailed walk-through. Use this every time you sit down to pray, until it becomes second nature.
1. Begin with the Sign of the Cross
“In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.”
2. Hold the Crucifix & Say the Apostles’ Creed
This foundational creed expresses the core tenets of faith:
“I believe in God the Father almighty,
Creator of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son,
our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and buried.
He descended into hell; the third day
He rose again from the dead;
He ascended into heaven, and sits at
the right hand of God the Father
almighty, from thence He shall come
to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy Catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body and life everlasting.
Amen.”
3. Recite the Lord's Prayer (Our Father Prayer)
On the first large bead (or knot) after the crucifix, pray:
“Our Father, Who art in heaven,
Hallowed be Thy Name.
Thy Kingdom come.
Thy Will be done,
on earth as it is in Heaven.Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil. Amen.”
4. Pray Three Hail Marys
On the next three beads, pray the Hail Mary — often for an increase in faith, hope, and charity.
“Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners,
now and at the hour of our death. Amen"
5. Pray the Glory Be & Fatima Prayer
On the chain or knot after those three Hail Mary beads:
Glory Be to the Father
“Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be,
world without end. Amen"Fatima (O My Jesus) Prayer
“O my Jesus, forgive us our sins
and save us from the fires of hell.
Lead all souls to heaven, especially those
in most need of thy mercy. Amen.”
6. Announce the First Mystery & Pray the Lord's Prayer
Choose the mystery appropriate to the day (Joyful, Luminous, Sorrowful, or Glorious). Then pray the Our Father.
7. Pray Ten Hail Marys While Meditating
On each of the next ten beads (a “decade”), pray a Hail Mary while meditating on that Mystery.
8. Pray the Glory Be + Fatima Prayer
At the end of that decade, pause on the chain knot or connector, then pray:
-
Glory Be
-
Fatima Prayer (optional)
9. Continue Through All Five Mysteries
Repeat the sequence — Mystery, Our Father, 10 Hail Marys, Glory Be, Fatima Prayer — for all five decades.
10. Conclude with the Hail Holy Queen & Sign of the Cross
After completing the fifth mystery:
Pray Hail Holy Queen:
"Hail, holy Queen, Mother of mercy, our life, oursweetness and our hope.
To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve.
To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this vale of tears.
Turn then, most gracious Advocate, thine eyes ofmercy toward us, and after this our exile, show untous the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
O merciful, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary!
Amen."
Then one final prayer:
“O God, whose only begotten Son, by His life, death and resurrectionm has purchased for us the rewards of eternal salvation. Grant we beseech Thee, that while meditating on these mysteris of the most Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, that we may both imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise, through Christ our Lord. Amen."
